A Director known for his passion, work ethic, and warmth, Daniel Lafrentz is an award-winning bi-coastal filmmaker with a potent combination of the focus born from learning his craft in Los Angeles and the flavor he absorbed making his home in New Orleans. Getting involved with his community and exploring the Louisiana countryside is how he developed his gift for creating authentic, lived-in worlds and the working-class underdogs often at the center of his work.
Daniel is currently packaging his second feature film, The Meet Cute Murders, an elevated cozy mystery and ensemble whodunnit. Set in the faded grandeur of an off-season, antebellum resort in rural Louisiana, it centers on a renowned (but currently slumping) horror novelist as her writing retreat is upended by a killer determined to write themselves into her next best-seller.
Recently, the proof-of-concept for Daniel’s New Orleans-set dad-tective pilot, Saint City, premiered at the Austin Film Festival and Dances With Films. He is also producing a feature documentary called Time II Unfinished Business for Fox and Rob Richardson, protagonists of the 2020 Oscar-nominated documentary Time. TIME II follows Fox and Rob as they use the legal and activism knowledge they gained during their 21-year prison experience to free their nephew and fall partner.
Daniel’s debut feature, a bayou-noir called The Long Shadow, won a Jury Prize at the New Orleans Film Festival where it was acquired by Gravitas Ventures and then released on Showtime. Prior to that, his UCLA MFA thesis film, the genre-bending Horror/Western Bleeding, Kansas, won the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Award.
When he’s not practicing and performing with his all-men’s dance team and service club, the 610 Stompers, Daniel tells stories about gentle people fighting to survive in an indifferent, sometimes cruel world, which makes his work a lot like him: a little dark, a little funny, and full of heart.
